John Howard Society of Nova Scotia - Treasurer

The John Howard Society of Nova Scotia is a registered non-profit organization and charity that has been active in Nova Scotia since 1950.  We are part of a network of approximately 70 other John Howard affiliates across the country, all working to advance the aim of ‘effective, just and humane responses to the causes and consequences of crime’.

The JHSNS offers a wide array of supports and services for people who are at risk, currently involved, or previously involved in the criminal justice system.  Our core activities include direct service supervision, advocacy, public education, research and resource development.

We have four offices: the Central Regional Office (Truro), Northeastern Regional Office (New Glasgow), Halifax Regional Office and the Provincial Office, co-located with the Halifax Office.  We have 9 full-time staff, a number of contract employees, practicum students and volunteers.  We are seen as a leader in restorative justice programming, serving as the RJ agency in Truro and New Glasgow.  We are proud of our reintegrative efforts which offer programs to develop specific skills and assistance for individuals making the transition from incarceration to the community.  We advocate on behalf of prisoners’ rights. Our current budget is approximately $1M.  We have  a dynamic Board of Directors, composed of 12 members with broad representation from governmental agencies and community organizations.
